1. Need a Laugh?
Humor tip:
Keep a note pad by the radio to capture fun sound bites like these.
Use them whenever a conversation brings one to mind.
Impress people with your sense of humor!
Examples: He thought he'd found "Ms. Right."
But then he found out her first name was "Always."
Did you know they have corsets for men?
Isn't that just kind of a fancy pot-holder?
I heard the rest on Car Talk (tm) ( http://www.cartalk.com ):
- Love is grand. Divorce is a couple of hundred grand.
- Never be afraid to try something new.
R emember, amateurs build the Ark.
Professionals built the Titanic.
- A day without sunshine is like night.
If you want to contribute humor to this column, please keep
in mind that our humor section is NOT just about singles.
That would limit us too much. But we do limit jokes that are:
- risqué
- anti-marriage
- gender bashing
(Well, maybe if they're not too malicious.)
We just don't want a negative tone to our humor.

Uplifting Excerpts
www.Selfnurture.com has a whole new look and approach.
Our main focus now is on Uplifting Excerpts.
The idea is to give you enough from each article that you can decide
if you like the writer's style and are interested in the topic.
Then you can purchase - very inexpensively - just those articles and
reports that interest you.
http://www,Selfnurture.com/excerpts-singles-self-esteem.htm
We eMail them to you, and you can share them with friends.
(See Section 2 for an example.)

2. Dance As If No One Were Watching (Including Your Inner Critic)
This excerpt from Sally Young's article, which contains valuable
advice for dancers and non-dancers alike.
Our inner critic surfaces in the form of:
- self put-down
- comparison and self-doubt
- judgments about our work, money, health, home
- judgments about PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Become aware of the variety of its attacks:
- What the judge is saying might actually be FUNNY.
- We might feel our strength coming up (hooray!) to defend us.
- Maybe we can just notice the mistake... but tell our judge to "take a hike."
By using these methods, we can feel a new sense of self-acceptance and freedom.

3. A Flirtatious Singles Mixer
Pass this idea on to anyone organizing a party. I love this game because everyone wins. The "winner" of each round gets to dance with the person who is "It". The "loser" is actually not a loser, because he or she gets to be the center of attention in the next round, and gets to choose the next winner.
This is SO different from school games, where NOT being picked for games meant nothing but misery!
You need:
- three chairs
- one hat
- a dance floor
- men and women
- a sense of fun
Step 1. Have a woman sit in the middle chair and put on the hat.
Step 2. Have two men sit on either side of her.
Step 3. The men flirt outrageously until she choose the most flirtatious.
Step 4. She moves the hat from her head to the man NOT chosen.
Step 5. The flirter and flirtee dance the next song while...
Step 6. The newly hatted person takes the hot seat.
Step 7. Have the next two women sit on either side of him.
Step 8. Continue as in Round 1, only now the women do the flirting.
Step 9. Do as many rounds as it takes for everyone to have a chance.
How do you flirt in this game? Oh, the usual: wink, bat eyelashes, play with hair, whisper sweet nothings. It's just a game; have fun with it. I tried draping my leg over the knee of the man who was "It." I think he liked it, but unfortunately, his wife was in the other chair. Naturally, he chose her, and I got the hat - which was fine with me, because then I was in the middle of two new men vying for my favor.
Thanks to the Victorian Society for this great mixer.

4. Benefits of a Common Mission
One way to enjoy being single is to find a common mission.
Married people have a built-in common mission: to keep the family unit strong. Single people who feel lonely are often just missing the joy, creativity, bonding, and sense of belonging they could get from being involved in some kind of common mission with other people.
A common mission may not bring financial rewards, but you will certainly gain that sense of accomplishment, community, and excitement that comes from being part of a growing group of like-minded people.
Some examples of common missions:
- Start a new club or a new division of an existing one.
- Create a networking group (face-to-face or Internet) about a specific topic.
- Find a community or church project that needs new leadership.
A common mission should give you an outlet for your creativity. Volunteering in an established group - although rewarding - may not have the strength of bonding that comes with a common mission to create something new.
See the following "word from our sponsor," for more common missions.

Opportunities for a Common Mission (Continued from previous article)
Well, it's your lucky day; we have some opportunities for you! Selfnurture.com is looking for volunteers and contributors to educate and motivate people. Our theme is that you must learn to love yourself in order to be more loving to others. If that is a value you hold, please join us!
Here are just a few ideas:
- Web-savvy people to start and run a classy, respectful, intelligent (yet fun!) chat room.
- Internet researchers to recommend related sites for our Self-Nurturing PORTAL. See http://www.Selfnurture.com/portal-self-help-singles.htm
- Power Shower and Gift Basket tester. What a great job! You get a free party, just so we can test and refine our Power Shower party planning and Self-Nurturing Gift Basket production. Mailto:JeanZartner@Selfnurture.com for more info.

5. Contest: A Scavenger Hunt for Backscratchers
In my class, "The Upside of Being Single," I mention that a backscratcher is a necessary tool for well-prepared, self-nurturing single. A former student wrote and asked where she could find one, saying, "I end up using a comb, because I'm resourceful, but would love the real McCoy. Have any suggestions?
- Itchy-Scratchy in Denver"
So, in the name of promoting "back happiness," we are running a Scavenger Hunt Contest. Just tell us where we can buy backscratchers in quantity. We may put them in Self-Nurturing Gift Baskets and possibly sell them separately. Send your tips to JeanZartner@Selfnurture.com
Everyone sending valid information is entered in a drawing for a $10 gift certificate which you can use towards any Selfnurture.com product or service: http://www.Selfnurture.com/online-catalog.htm
If your itches can't wait to be scratched:
- Call a company called Signatures at 909-943-2021.
(That's where my mom got mine, and I love it.)
- Visit http://www.thegrid.net/I/i678171/scratch.html
"Itchy-Scratchy in Denver" ended up finding a nice one here.

6. Worthy Web Pages
I came upon a site for the LaBelle Foundation, an organization to facilitate and implement the raising of individual self-esteem.
Go to http://www.selfesteem.org and click on "LaBelle".
Look under "Our Curriculum".
Click on the link to "Do you really want to raise your self-esteem?"
You'll find "Twelve Steps to Get Started."
The site also explains that: Self-Esteem, as defined by the National Association for Self-Esteem, is the experience of being capable of meeting life's challenges and being worthy of happiness."
Thanks to Betty Hatch for permission to quote the site.

Singles Events in Other Cities
We may start web pages like www.Selfnurture.com/singles-denver-events.htm for other towns. Would you like to do that page for your fair city?
This is a great idea for promoting:
- a singles' group
- a service for singles (such as a counseling practice for divorce recovery)
- presentation attracting singles (dating, self-confidence, self-discovery)
You handle local publicity, telling people about the page. We'll set up and maintain the page You just eMail us the content. Contact JeanZartner@Selfnurture.com
